Using the square breathing and “Taoist nap” techniques that I learned at your clinic have helped me relax and feel more centered. I like that they are so easy to do, and only take a few minutes a day to see benefits.
How Breathing Relaxes You
Breathing properly relaxes your body. You can experience this by putting one hand on your belly button, and trying to lift your hand with your inhalation.
Breathing shallowly, in your chest, tells your body that it is time to fight or flee. Most people breathe like this, and it sends stress signals to your body–pumping up adrenaline and cortisol–stress chemicals that make you feel jumpy.
Belly breathe for two to three minutes and see how much better you feel.
FAQ
I do yoga--is that compatible with Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Yoga and other types of movement practices are excellent compliments to acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. In this case, yoga, along with acupuncture, both work in different ways to promote your best health. At the end of the day, any practice that helps you balance your mind-body energies is likely a good compliment to Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Where can I learn more about Qi Gong?
There are excellent tutorial videos on You Tube that can help you start your Qi Gong practice. You can also find Qi Gong and Tai Chi classes taught through most Community Education programs. You can also contact the YMCA to find out what types of classes they are teaching, as well as classes taught in Community Centers (like Whitney Senior Center).
Do I need to improve my lifestyle for acupuncture to work?
Doing the best you can to promote a healthy lifestyle is a good step toward self-care. That may mean improving exercises like walking or doing activities like hiking, biking, lifting weights or swimming.
However, you do not “have” to do these things in order for acupuncture to work. Acupuncture will work with your body’s own energy and ability to heal.
The better your health, the faster you are likely to heal–so in that sense, self-care supports acupuncture by supporting better health.
